Can the Erzgebirge nutcrackers be used to crack nuts?
Our authentic nutcrackers are handcrafted and hand-painted - and they are all fully operational and can be used to open nuts. But most people do not use their nutcrackers as an everyday way of cracking nuts, as after fair use, there is a chance the paint will become slightly damaged. This is why our treasured nutcrackers are often bought for decoration only.

How do I use an incense smoker?
Another classic Erzgebirge piece of German folk art is the classic incense smoker. Also hand-carved and hand-painted, these charming wooden creations are made to envelop an incense cone while the smoke slowly rises from the top, usually from the character's mouth or pipe.

This is how they work:

• Remove the top of the figurine from the base.
• Next, put an incense cone in the base and light it carefully with a match or lighter.
• Replace the top part and place it over the lit incense cone.
• The fragrant smoke will then rise and come out of the openings at the top of the smoker - all you have to do then is enjoy!

Another piece of traditional German folk art is the weather house. This is a decorative device that helps tell if it's damp and raining or fair and dry outside - usually with a thermometer in the middle.

Two figurines indicate the degree of fine or damp weather within the weather house and emerge in their specific type of weather - the male for damp or rainy weather and the female for dry and fine weather.

The figures are moved by an internal mechanism that retracts and expands depending on the level of humidity in the air. This moves a plate on which the figurines sit and determines which one emerges from the house.
